Does Tamino have a lot of applications for which it obviously outperforms non-native XML storage alternatives?

As for that link -- yeah, I need to check it out. :) Lots of case studies about apps, if nothing else.

And I must confess that I didn't even know Software AG had gone public. Back when Software AG of North America was a public company that I followed as a stock analyst, I annoyed the Darmstadt guys by finding the filings that even German private companies have to make, and publicizing the results broadly. But once again, that was over 20 years ago; things change.

I just read your latest Computerworld column, and saw the bullet update to your January column re XML.

Mainframe DB2 V9 has a lot coming with XML (out of NDA and the beta starts in June). Whether or not customers will implement quickly is another thing; V7 -> V8 migration did not occur like the gangbusters that IBM thought (and still hasn't, based on my observations). IBM has stated there will be no V7 -> V9 path.

You really should look at Tamino closely - http://www.softwareag.com/Corporate/products/tamino/default.asp. It's a good product that unfortunately came out right at the start of the dot bomb so it got lost in the fallout. It is a native XML DBMS - and it is not based on ADABAS (which, IMHO, still beats any RDBMS, but that's just my HO).

Take a trip to Darmstadt - it's grown a bit since 1984. Drink real beer. (But visit after July 9 so you don't have to put up with the World Cup havoc.)
