High-performance analytics
For the past few months, I’ve collected a lot of data points to the effect that high-performance analytics – i.e., beyond straightforward query — is becoming increasingly important. And I’ve written about some of them at length. For example:
- MapReduce – controversial or in some cases even disappointing though it may be – has a lot of use cases.
- It’s early days, but Netezza and Teradata (and others) are beefing up their geospatial analytic capabilities.
- Memory-centric analytics is in the spotlight.
Ack. I can’t decide whether “analytics” should be a singular or plural noun. Thoughts?
Another area that’s come up which I haven‘t blogged about so much is data mining in the database. Data mining accounts for a large part of data warehouse use. The traditional way to do data mining is to extract data from the database and dump it into SAS. But there are problems with this scenario, including:

Carson Schmidt of Teradata on SSDs
Carson Schmidt is, in essence, Teradata’s VP of product development for everything other than applications and database software. For example, he oversees Teradata’s hardware, storage, and switching technology. So when Teradata Chief Development Officer Scott Gnau didn’t have answers at his fingertips to some questions about SSDs (Solid-State Drives), he bucked me over to Carson. How to tell Teradata’s product lines apart
Once Netezza hit the market, Teradata had a classic “disruptive” price problem – it offered a high end product, at a high price, sporting lots of features that not all customers needed or were willing to pay for. Teradata has at times slashed prices in competitive situations, but there are obvious risks to that, especially when a customer already has a number of other Teradata systems for which it paid closer to full price.
This year, Teradata has introduced a range of products that flesh out its competitive lineup. There now are three mainstream Teradata offerings, plus two with more specialized applicability. Teradata no longer has to sell Cadillacs to customers on Corolla budgets.
But how do we tell the five Teradata product lines apart? The names are confusing, both in their hardware-vendor product numbers and their data-warehousing-dogma product names, especially since in real life Teradata products’ capabilities overlap. Indeed, Teradata executives freely admit that the Teradata Data Mart Appliance 551 can run smaller data warehouses, while the Teradata Data Warehouse Appliance 2550 is positioned in large part at what Teradata quite reasonably calls data marts.
When one looks past the difficulties of naming, Teradata’s product lineup begins to make more sense. Let’s start by considering the three main Teradata products.

Teradata Geospatial, and datatype extensibility in general
As part of it’s 13.0 release this week, Teradata is productizing its geospatial datatype, which previously was just a downloadable library. (Edit: More precisely, Teradata announced 13.0, which will actually be shipped some time in 2009.) What Teradata Geospatial now amounts to is:
- User-defined functions (UDF) written by Teradata (this is the part that existed before).
- (Possibly new) Enhanced implementations of the Teradata geospatial UDFs, for better performance.
- (Definitely new) Optimizer awareness of the Teradata geospatial UDFs.
Teradata also intends in the future to implement actual geospatial indexing; candidates include r-trees and tesselation.
Hearing this was a good wake-up call for me, because in the past I’ve conflated two issues on datatype extensibility, namely:
- Whether the query executer uses a special access method (i.e., index type) for the datatype
- Whether the optimizer is aware of the datatypes.
But as Teradata just pointed out, those two issues can indeed be separated from each other.

Quick guide to Teradata’s announcements this week
The Teradata Partners (i.e., user) conference is this week. So there have been lots of press releases, some presentations, lots of meetings, and so on. A lot of Teradata’s messaging is in flux, as it moves fairly rapidly to correct what I believe have been some deficiencies in the past. One confusing result is that there was very little prebriefing about the actual announcement details, and we’re all scrambling to figure out what’s up.

Patrick Walravens’ SAP/Teradata speculation doesn’t make much sense
A persistent analyst named Patrick Walravens keeps speculating about an SAP acquisition of Teradata. So far as I can tell, Walravens is the sole source of this rumor, evidently because he actually thinks the combination would make some kind of business sense.
An example of the “logic” behind this theory is:
Mr. Walravens’s latest evidence pointing to such a move stems from the expected departure of a SAP executive who had been running the company’s NetWeaver software line, which includes a data warehouse package.
At a guess, Walravens is saying that Teradata’s products and SAP’s BI Accelerator somehow substitute for each other in the marketplace. If you believe that comparison, I’d like to sell you a railroad locomotive made by Jaguar. Read more

- Last week, Teradata claimed it has the most sophisticated analytic geospatial data management capability.
- Also last week, Netezza’s newly acquired Netezza Spatial technology attracted a lot of attention.
- This week, Oracle called attention to its geospatial capabilities.

So what does Oracle Exadata mean for HP Neoview?
That HP is committed to selling a lot of data warehouse hardware — and probably data warehouse appliances in particular — seems obvious, for reasons including:
- HP bought a big BI/data warehousing consulting operation in Knightsbridge.
- HP has put considerable effort into its data warehouse appliance Neoview.
- HP CEO Mark Hurd comes from data warehouse appliance vendor Teradata.
- Data warehousing where the big bucks are.
But Oracle Exadata could produce those appliance sales. So where does HP Neoview fit in?
I was told by an investor today that HP’s investor relations department is saying Oracle Exadata is a Netezza competitor, while Neoview is more in the Teradata market. That’s laughable. Read more

Netezza overseas
22% of Netezza’s revenue comes from outside the US, at least if we use last quarter’s figures as a guide. At first blush, that doesn’t sound like much. Indeed, percentage-wise it surely lags behind Teradata, Greenplum (which has sold a lot in Asia/Pacific under Netezza’s former head of that region), and a few smaller competitors headquartered outside the US. Teradata sound bites
In connection with Teradata’s attempt to get into the Netezza news cycle with an appliance product announcement, I’ve whipped up a few Teradata-related sound bites suitable for quoting.
- Teradata has been in the data warehouse appliance business since 1984. I’m glad they’re finally admitting it.
- Teradata’s users love them. The users’ bosses, who sign the checks, aren’t as thrilled. Price competition is a big issue for Teradata.
- Teradata pricing has caused some real resistance, and even anger. Price is the big reason some startups are growing so much faster than Teradata. Ease of installation is sometimes a second factor.
- Teradata isn’t going to win many price-per-terabyte shootouts. (Note: I mean price per terabyte of user data.)
- The 5-10X+ performance advantage isn’t as crazy as it sounds, at least for some use cases. Teradata does still get a lot of business, and wins some price/performance shootouts to get it.
- Many Teradata customers are buying newer analytic DBMS as well. But they aren’t throwing out Teradata. Most stories of Teradata replacements are misunderstandings.
- The analytic DBMS startups all still do most of their business supporting data marts. If you have a high-concurrency workload, you usually need more mature technology. That’s where Teradata shines.
- That said, the very largest data warehouses are usually really data marts. High-concurrency BI is usually run against somewhat smaller databases.
- The upper limit for data warehouse sizes is skyrocketing. In 18 months, we’re seeing the largest known production systems go from under 1 petabyte of user data to multiple petabytes.
- Teradata has more competition for the very largest databases than it used to, which are now being found in relatively young web companies even more than in old-line telcos, retailers, or banks.

Teradata decides to compete head-on as a data warehouse appliance vendor
In a press release today that is surely timed to impinge on the Netezza user conference news cycle, Teradata has come out swinging. Highlights include:
- Teradata, which long avoided the “appliance” term, now says it sells both “data warehouse appliances” and “data mart appliances.” Indeed, it claims to have “invented the original appliance” — which is pretty close to being true.*
- Teradata claims its “new appliance easily delivers up to 5 to 10 times performance improvement over competitors’ appliances,” at $119,000 per terabyte US list price.
- Teradata claims a 150% faster “scan rate” than competitors. Teradata is surely thinking of Netezza when saying that.
- Teradata claims 10X performance improvement on “selected queries” vs. the “competition.”
- Teradata thinks its geospatial data management capability is better than competitors’, and that this is an important indicator of Teradata’s general overall greater sophistication.

Teradata’s major vertical markets in 2007
From a May, 2008 earnings conference call transcript:
- telecommunication, media and entertainment industry is 28%;
- financial services is 24%;
- retail is 19% of our revenues last year;
- manufacturing 9%;
- government 7%;
- travel and transportation 6%;
- and healthcare 5%.

Teradata/Netezza/Tesco kerfuffle
Netezza evidently put out a press release bragging of a competitive replacement of Teradata at UK retailing giant Tesco. That press release cannot be now found on Netezza’s site, but it lives on elsewhere. Meanwhile, Teradata has put out a press release in which Tesco is quoted emphatically contradicting what it is quoted as saying in the Netezza press release. While I haven’t discussed this with Netezza, my guess is that somebody there got a little overenthusiastic in advance of their user conference next week and thought they’d gotten a permission they really hadn’t.
Beyond that, I’d note that the Netezza quote made reference to around 25 heavy analytical users, while the Teradata quote talked of 8000 people across more than 2000 suppliers.

Enterprises are buying multiple brands of analytic DBMS each
Over the past few weeks I’ve had a lot of NDA discussions about analytic DBMS vendors’ specific customers. And so I’ve been acutely aware of something I already sort of knew — just as there was in prior generations of database management technology, there’s huge overlap among analytic DBMS vendors’ customer bases as well. As they always have, enterprises are investing in multiple different brands of DBMS, even in cases where those DBMS can do pretty much the same things.
For example:
- Many Teradata users are buying newer technology too. But they aren’t actually throwing out Teradata.
- The same sometimes applies to Netezza already. At least two Netezza references are also references for a rival vendor.
- One outfit is among the biggest customers for two different analytic DBMS vendors, neither of which is Teradata or Netezza.
- One corporation is using or deploying four different brands of analytic DBMS.
- TEOCO is a big user of both DATAllegro and Netezza.

One of my favorite pages on the Monash Research website is the list of many current and a few notable past customers. (Another favorite page is the one for testimonials.) For a variety of reasons, I won’t undertake to be more precise about my current customer list than that. But I don’t think it would hurt anything to list the data warehouse DBMS/appliance specialists in the group. They are:

How will Oracle save its data warehouse business?
By acquiring DATAllegro, Microsoft has seriously leapfrogged Oracle in data warehouse technology. All doubts about maturity and versatility notwithstanding, DATAllegro has a 10X or better size advantage (actually, I think it’s more like 20-40X) versus Oracle in warehouses its technology can straightforwardly handle. Oracle cannot afford to let this move go unanswered.
It’s of course possible that Oracle has been successfully developing comparable data warehouse technology internally. But it’s unlikely. Oracle hasn’t done anything that radical, internally and successfully, for about 15 years, RAC (Real Application Clusters) excepted. (I.e., since the object/relational extensibility framework started in Release 7.) So in all likelihood, the answer will come via acquisition. I think there are four candidates that make the most sense: Teradata, Vertica, ParAccel, and Greenplum. Kognitio (controlled by former Oracle honcho Geoff Squire) might be in the mix as well. Netezza is probably a non-starter because of its hardware-centric strategy.

Top-end data warehouse sizes have grown hundreds-fold over the past 12 years
I just tripped across a link from February, 1996 in which NCR/Teradata:
- Bragged that it had half a dozen customers with >1 TB of raw user data
- Showed off a “record-breaking” 11 TB simulation
That represents roughly a 60-70% annual growth rate in top-end database sizes in the intervening 12 years.

Netezza pricing
In connection with the announcement of the Teradata 2500, I asked some Teradata competitors about pricing. Netezza’s response amounted to “We don’t disclose list pricing, but our cheapest system handles about 3 1/4 TB and sells for under $200K.” So Netezza’s actual pricing is well below the list price of the Teradata 2500.

Teradata introduces lower-cost appliances
After months of leaks, Teradata has unveiled its new lines of data warehouse appliances, raising the total number either from 1 to 3 (my view) or 0 to 2 (what you believe if you think Teradata wasn’t previously an appliance vendor). Most significant is the new Teradata 2500 series, meant to compete directly with the smaller data warehouse specialists. Highlights include:
- An oddly precise estimated capacity of “6.12 terabytes”/node (user data). This estimate is based on 30% compression, which is low by industry standards, and surely explains part of the price umbrella the Teradata 2500 is offering other vendors.
- $125K/TB of user data. Obviously, list pricing and actual pricing aren’t the same thing, and many vendors don’t even bother to disclose official price lists. But the Teradata 2500 seems more expensive than most smaller-vendor alternatives.
- Scalability up to 24 nodes (>140 TB).
- Full Teradata application-facing functionality. Some of Teradata’s rivals are still working on getting all of their certifications with tier-1 and tier-2 business intelligence tools. Teradata has a rich application ecosystem.
- What will be controversial performance, until customer-benchmark trends clearly emerge.

Positioning the data warehouse appliances and specialty DBMS
There now are four hardware vendors that each offer or seem about to announce two different tiers of data warehouse appliances: Sun, HP, EMC, and Teradata. Specifically:

Sun partners with both Greenplum and ParAccel.

HP sells Neoview, and also is partnered with Vertica.

EMC (together with Dell in North America and Bull in Europe) sells DATAllegro. Now EMC is also entering a partnership with ParAccel.

Teradata is pretty far down the road toward releasing a low-end product.
The biggest eBay database
There’s been some confusion over my post about eBay’s multiple petabytes of data. So to clarify, let me say:
- eBay’s figure of >1.4 petabytes of data — for its largest single analytic database — counts disks or something, not raw user data.
- I previously published a strong conjecture that the database vendor in question was Teradata, which is definitely an eBay supplier. In particular, it is definitely not an Oracle data warehouse.
- While eBay isn’t saying who it is either — not even off-the-record — the 50%ish compression figures they experience just happen to map well to Teradata’s usual range.
- Edit: Just to be clear — not that there was any doubt, but I have reconfirmed that eBay is a Teradata user, in or including eBay’s Paypal division.

Is Teradata bringing out a low-end data warehouse appliance?
Edit: This post is superseded by our analysis of the new Teradata 2500 data warehouse appliance.
One of Teradata’s competitors believes they got an accurate leak about a new low-end Teradata appliance. Teradata is neither confirming nor denying. I believe the leak.
I’m not going to give product or pricing details, which in any case could be subject to change before a final product release. But the general idea is:
- Commodity Dell servers.
- Some of the higher-end software stripped out.
- Limit on the number of nodes, leading to a database size limit somewhere in the tens of terabytes.
It will be interesting to see whether Teradata can come out with something that’s closely competitive in price, performance, and administrative ease to what the newer data warehouse appliance vendors offer, yet upgrades cleanly to full-sophistication Teradata systems for those who choose to pursue that path.

Intelligent Enterprise’s list of 12/36/48 vendors
I’m getting a flood of press releases today, because many of the companies I write about were selected to Intelligent Enterprise’s list of 12 most influential vendors plus 36 more to watch in the areas Intelligent Enterprise covers (which seems to be pretty much the analytics-related parts of what I write about here and on Text Technologies). It looks like a pretty reasonable list, although I think they forced the issue in some of the small analytics vendors they selected, and of course anybody can quibble with some of the omissions.
Among the companies they cited, you can find topical categories here for IBM (and Cognos), Informatica, Microsoft, Netezza, Oracle, SAP/Business Objects (both), SAS, and Teradata; QlikTech; Cast Iron, Coral8, DATAllegro, HP, ParAccel, and StreamBase; and Software AG.
