Teradata and Netezza are doing MapReduce too
Netezza told me a while ago that it planned to introduce MapReduce, and agreed yesterday this was no longer NDAed. Stephen Brobst of Teradata* let slip at XLDB that Teradata has MapReduce too, apparently implemented but not yet generally available.
I don’t have details in either case. Netezza and Teradata evidently aren’t taking MapReduce as seriously as Aster Data, or even Greenplum or Vertica. But MapReduce has become pretty much of a “checkmark” item for large-database analytic DBMS vendors even so.
*Technically, Brobst is not and never has been a Teradata employee — but he’s widely and correctly regarded as being “of Teradata” even so. 🙂

Wow. That picture looks almost as old as the one I use for my Twitter avatar. 😉
Anyhow, two things to note are:
1. Teradata has multiple CTOs. (Todd Walter comes to mind.)
2. I stand by my story that Stephen isn’t actually a Teradata employee. He told me that directly in Lyon, and he uses a different company name than “Teradata” when talking at TDWI.

Curious if you have any insight which companies are using MapReduce. It seems to be used in big data web shops like Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Fox Interactive Media, etc. that have very strong engineering groups but I haven’t seen much/any mention(s) for technology consumer companies (typical IT shops versus technology creator companies).

Hadoop World NY has listed as presenters NY Times, Visa, JPMorganChase, Booz Allen Hamilton and China Mobile.
