DB2 engine coming soon for MySQL — but that’s DB2 on the iSeries
Chris Maxcer reports that a DB2 storage engine for MySQL is coming soon. But that’s specifically on the i Series — i.e., the heirs of the AS/400 and before that System 38 product lines. While those are arguably the best systems IBM ever produced, it’s still a non-event for most of the IT market. DB2 isn’t DB2 isn’t DB2 …

What a strange decision – to make it only available on those platforms. DB2 has some excellent technology in it (ARIES, etc); it would be great to have that as a MySQL engine on platforms of interest to a much wider audience.
I see that IBM’s pushing “The Power of PHP and MySQL”. I suppose that’s because so many people use PHP, and the idea of using PHP has become more normative since people have been using the phrase “LAMP stack”.
My wife’s family had a saying for when someone turns down their share of food (e.g. a cake): “More for me!” I feel that way about the PHP users. We’re all better off because so many of our competitors are using such dreadful technology and we can do so much better in comparison to them.
The i Series and its predecessors were always IBM’s weak sisters in terms of DBMS support. This goes way back to issues in the 1980s and early 1990s with both lack of need (cool integrated file system) and lack of opportunity (long time before the C compiler worked). Don’t assume this is full DB2 even now.
